Could sexual addiction end Governor David Paterson’s career?

By Irene Reznick

According to established theory, sex addiction is very real.
Social scientists agree that sexual addicts act in a compulsive manner without regard for the risks involved as they hunt for sexual experiences. Neither their station in life, nor the possible damage to their family means anything to the prowling sex addict. So if family considerations mean little to the addict, laws and other social conventions mean still less.
David Paterson shows some of the signs of sexual addiction, but he has no history with prostitutes. Such “walks on the wild side” were done by Eliot Spitzer, but not Paterson.

Paterson admits to “sporadic” sexual meetings with a limited number of women. This does not seem likely. As a Democratic New York State Senator, life for Mr. Paterson was very boring. The Republicans have held the Senate since before living memory and thus it has always been a one way ticket to obscurity for a Democrat. Idle hands are the devils workshop, it is said.

Among other hallmarks of sexually addicted behavior, we find anonymous sex with many partners. We can rule that out because David Paterson is blind. While he would have had the time and the boredom to search out anonymous sex, the logistics involved with a blind Black man connecting with multiple anonymous partners just doesn’t wash.

No, he would need willing female partners, those who would drive him places. He said he was separated from his wife. Was he therefore involved in a “stable” relationship or two over the years? Serial relationships cut down on logistical problems so they make sense when considering the sexual history of a bored and separated politician. If this is the case it will mean nothing, but if one of these relationships produced a child the roof will blow off his governorship.
