Kingfish Obama and his Huey Long Socialism
By Kevin “Coach” Collins
On April fool’s Day 1935 Time magazine’s cover featured Louisiana Senator Huey Long because he was challenging Franklin Roosevelt for the 1936 Democrat Party nomination. Known as the Kingfish, Long was actually a devoted socialist who’s battle cry would be “share the wealth.”
To explain his plan he wrote and distributed a short book, My First Days in the White House. It talked about what Huey “Kingfish” Long would accomplish in his first 100 days as president. Those who think Barack Obama’s socialist plans for America are in any way novel might be surprised at the familiar elements of both plans.
Long wanted to appoint both Franklin Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover to his cabinet. Ironically Hoover, the man who had blundered his way into igniting the Great Depression, would serve as Secretary of Commerce. Like Obama, the Kingfish wasn’t as concerned about competence as he was about getting a “name” at his side. The economic team Obama has put together has many of the same qualities. People like Robert Rubin who are to various degrees responsible for today’s mess will serve the Obama Administration.
Huey wanted universal health care (socialized medicine), a greater federal role in
education with free college for all, (of course) and the Federal Reserve run by elected officials (read Democrat hacks as they would be today).
The jewel of Long’s plan was his “Share the wealth” tax policy that would have just as literally punished the remaining achievers in 1935 as Obama’s plan will in 2009.
By contrast Long did not attempt to call paying higher taxes “patriotic” as Obama’s idiotic Vice President Joe Biden did. Long was too smart for that. Nevertheless, the Kingfish did lay out the roadmap to socialism Obama is copying.
He wanted to cap personal wealth and strip away money above what HE thought was too much so he could “share” it with those who didn’t earn it. He would steal money from those who had it, to guarantee a minimum yearly income for every American family. He would force companies to run on 30 hour work weeks and provide a guaranteed four week vacation to every worker. The Long socialist plan would guaranty every worker would be paid enough to buy a home, a car, a radio, and “other” ordinary conveniences.
Like the Kingfish, Obama has no understanding of the how or why of macro economics. As devoted socialists both men blame capitalism for the economic problems of their time and Obama has mimicked Long in his warnings of “civil unrest” (threats to mainstream Americans who warn ‘get with the program’).
It is indeed a disturbing thought that just as Mao’s robotic followers waved copies of his Little Red Book in the faces of “reactionary pigs” we may soon see millions of ACORN workers waving newly reprinted copies of Huey Long’s My First Days in the White House in our faces as they try to “share our wealth.”
