Maybe Judd Gregg didn’t have a “road to Damascus” conversion after all
By Kevin “Coach” Collins
Yesterday brought one of the few bright spots for our side in a while when we heard that Judd Gregg had turned down Obama’s empty offer to appoint him as Commerce Secretary. Conservatives felt a surge of satisfaction that the Senator from New Hampshire had experienced a “St Paul on the road to Damascus” type awakening and realized he was deserting our team at a very critical moment.
There was speculation that Gregg had second thoughts about trusting the Democrat Governor of his state to actually appoint another Republican as his replacement – as if that ever had a chance of happening.
The “story” from Gregg was that he could not see eye to eye with the President on major issue such as the so-called stimulus bill. At least we were spared the old politician’s moan of “wanting to spend more time with my family.”
Maybe the truth is that as a Cabinet designee Senator Gregg would have problems explaining his actions as regards the huge amount of bailout money he was able to deliver to the banking industry. This would have given his “good friends” from the other party a chance to roast him in the public vetting he would have been put through. This is because as of last Thursday he held $3 million in Bank America stock, as he did while he was crafting ways to use TARP to pump $ billions our tax payer dollars into the banking industry’s hands.
Under Commerce Department ethics rules as its Secretary, Gregg would either have to place his holdings in a blind trust( not very wise in this climate) or sell his shares outright.
It’s hard to overlook these facts and say Judd Gregg stood on principle when he declined the offer.
Politicians take care of themselves first and always.
Never the “stand up” leader willing to be gracious in defeat, of course Barack Obama blames Gregg saying it was HIS idea to join Team Obama. Gregg disputes that and with the lies from the White House piling up, I’ll go with Gregg on this one.
Gregg apparently wandered into the trap and was willfully blinding himself to the “Chicago Way” of smash mouth politics the Democrats have brought with them. Then at some point he realized they would bring up his banking connections if he complained about the “census issue.”
He probably began to have second thoughts about how his confirmation hearing would go. That gave him reason to fear Democrat questions. Given the damage he was about to do to the GOP, he had to fear the Democrats running the hearing would allow angry Republicans to trash him as well. It’s tough to get a lobbying gig when you leave office under a toxic cloud.
